Since 1996 Advance Training has specialised in providing multiple-choice questions for police officers in England and Wales, initially for a computer-based training product - the Computerised Study Kit - and latterly a paper-based product for use in IPLDP / PCSO Knowledge Checks by police forces.
The Computerised Study Kit consists of a large database of multiple choice questions with fully explained answers. However it is more than just a vast bank of questions as the Kit uses the computer to full advantage by providing personal feedback on strengths and weaknesses which helps to build confidence and target study.
Each year after the results are published from each OSPRE part 1 exam, we send out questionnaires to all registered users which have shown our pass rates to be consistently 2 to 3 times the national average.
There are Kits for:
All these Kits can be combined into the MultiPack Computerised Study Kit for use in police force training centres.
The Blackstone's Police Manuals comprise almost 1000 pages which can seem quite a daunting task when it comes to studying. For this reason the OSPRE Part 1 Kits also include a study timetable calculator. All you need to do is spend 10 minutes telling the computer your shift pattern, any holidays you have booked together with when you want to start and finish your studying and it will produce a tailor-made study timetable telling you what you need to study on each day from now until the exam. If you slip behind with your studying then you can quickly re-calculate your timetable which will help you get back on track.
Perhaps the one thing that our registered users appreciate more than anything else is the level of service that they get from Advance Training. At least once a month your computer will automatically connect to our website and download an update so that any questions which have changed in the last month will be updated on your computer.
In the months of February, May, August and November the update also includes our Law Update - an electronic newsletter which provides greater detail about these changes both for your studying and your everyday policing.
For people who are not on the internet there is an option to receive quarterly updates on CD.
In 2006 the Centrex Regional Training Centres were replaced with each Home Office police force providing in-house probationer training in the form of the Initial Police Learning and Development Programme - IPLDP. Forces are required to deliver training in accordance with a National Skills Framework with the discretion to provide the training in accordance with local needs. Conseqently each of the forces in England and Wales is implementing the IPLDP in a different way.
For most forces there has been considerable effort in setting up the IPLDP and so the additional requirement of having to produce Knowledge Checks has been quite a burden. Advance Training have therefore produced a new database of multiple-choice questions specifically for use in IPLDP Knowledge Checks. Due to the widely varying requirements between forces both in relation to syllabus and frequency of checks, we have developed an in-house system which provides a complete Knowledge Check creation and marking service. Since 2001 Advance Training has been accredited by the Open Distance Learning Quality Council. This accreditation was renewed in 2004 for a further 3 years.
